Circular Economy Seminar and AGM

This November we are combining a seminar on the circular economy and our annual general meeting (AGM).

Speakers for the event are:

Samantha Cross (Plastic Police) will talk about the Plastic Police Partnership Program which focuses on recycling soft plastics.

Plastic Police founder Samantha Cross has started a program that creates a ‘circular economy’ for soft plastics. Plastic police are engaging with businesses, councils and schools to close the loop on soft plastic waste in the Hunter region.

For example, Dungog Shire Council has been part of the Plastic Police program for over 18 months. During this time, Council has diverted over 10 tonnes of soft plastics from landfill through its partnership with Plastic Police and Boomerang Bags. By participating in the program, Council is ensuring soft plastics are kept out of landfill and the environment, and kept in the circular economy.  Recently, the Council purchased outdoor furniture made from recycled soft plastics in order to ‘close the loop’ on the soft plastics generated within the region.

Steven Baylis (Downer Group) will talk about Downer’s Teralba Asphalt Plant which will be capable of incorporating recycled materials (such as soft plastics) into the asphalt it produces.

Downer Group is constructing an $8 million asphalt plant in Teralba that will pave the way for soft plastics and other recycled material to be used in local road construction. The plant will create new avenues to recycle and repurpose waste materials such as soft plastics from plastic bags and packaging, glass and toner from used print cartridges.

Jonathan Wood (NSW Office of Environment and Heritage) will give an overview of what Circular Economy is, why we should care and what NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and the NSW Government are doing about it.

Current patterns of resource use in NSW are no longer sustainable and current resource recovery policies and technologies are no longer fit for purpose. This impacts businesses, households, the environment, human health, State and Local Government and the NSW economy. These impacts have been compounded by China’s National Sword policy.

The NSW Government is developing a Circular Economy Policy that will minimise these negative impacts and deliver positive economic, social and environmental outcomes for the NSW
community. The recently released a draft Circular Economy Policy that outlines the principles and ideas that can help to shape our approach to resource use and waste management in NSW.
