HEI December Seminar – Biodiversity Reforms

The December seminar will focus on recent changes to biodiversity management in NSW, including assessment processes implemented under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and the new Land Management Framework.

Two guest speakers for the December seminar include;

Jane Gibbs – Director Ecosystem Assessment and Planning.

Jane Gibbs is the Director Ecosystem Assessment and Planning at the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. Jane has over 24 years’ experience including the public sector, as an environmental consultant in the Hunter, and on a sabbatical where she worked for the United Nations Environment Program in Geneva, Switzerland. She holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) degree from the University of Newcastle, a Master of Environmental Law from the University of Sydney and will soon complete an Executive Master of Public Administration degree with the Australia and New Zealand School of Government. From 2014-2017 she was a Board Member of the Nature Conservation Trust and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In 2018, Jane will be lecturing in environmental law at the University of Newcastle.

Nicolai Cooper – Senior Land Services Officer.

Nicolai is a Vegetation Ecologist with experience from the coast to the western rangelands in New South Wales. Nicolai is commended on her high level negotiation skills resulting in the development of contracts on private land that meet social, environmental and ecological requirements. Nicolai provides support for innovation through sharing networks and ideas to communities and businesses. The presentation will outline the options for landholders under the new Land Management Framework (LMF) including: – A case study of a “code compliant certificate” – allowable activities and applicable land zonings – where to access information resources on the LMF including introduction of local staff – Sustainable Land Management approach to Monitoring and Evaluation Some information that will be covered is on the following website: https://www.lls.nsw.gov.au/sustainable-landmanagement
