HEI AGM + Contaminants In Your Environment – dust and soil analysis in your home

November 24, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

  • « Caring for Water and Country – National Water Week
  • Sustainable Construction Practices: Demolition Waste Processing and Management »

Dr Cynthia Isley, who runs Macquarie University’s DustSafe Program, will be presenting the DustSafe and VegeSafe programs, which have looked at soil and dust contaminants in our residential environments. These programs initially focussed on trace metal contaminants and their sources, including looking at lead isotopes and the health implications of the bioaccessibility of metals in different size fractions.

More recently DustSafe has expanded to consider microplastics, antimicrobial resistance markers, perfluorinated chemicals and our microbiome.

As well as giving plenty of data to study scientifically, the DustSafe and VegeSafe programs have impacted the community, with participants reporting that they now understand more about science and have made changes to reduce contaminant exposures in their home environment.

About the Speaker:

Dr Cynthia Isley (see bio below and pic attached) Dr Cynthia Isley runs Macquarie University’s DustSafe program, which is helping thousands of Australians and those in 35 countries to understand contaminants in their home environment. Cynthia has also been involved in studies of air pollutant sources and their health implications across the Pacific Islands and Australia and in using bees and lichen to trace contaminants in our environment. Cynthia has a B Eng (Env) Hons from the University of Newcastle and a PhD from Macquarie University in Environmental Science.
