Energy Transition in the Hunter – HEI & GHD Collaborative Event

Hunter Environmental Institute, in collaboration with GHD, hosted a dynamic in-person seminar exploring the energy transition in the Hunter region. Featuring insightful presentations from professionals leading key developments across renewable energy, mine closure, and stakeholder engagement, the event provided a platform for sharing ideas, discussing challenges, and highlighting innovation in the energy landscape.


Following the seminar and Q&A, attendees networked over drinks and nibbles while continuing discussions on the Hunter’s evolving energy future.


Guest Speakers


Sarah Guilfoyle – Director Stakeholder Relations and Communications, Oceanex Energy
Sarah brings over 20 years’ experience in stakeholder engagement, communications, and government relations across sectors including infrastructure, energy, and mining. At Oceanex Energy, she is committed to creating mutually beneficial outcomes for stakeholders as Australia’s offshore wind industry develops.


Michael Moore – Manager, Approvals, Yancoal Australia Ltd
Michael is responsible for leading major environmental approvals at Yancoal, including the Stratford Pumped Hydro Project. With 30+ years in the resources sector, he has worked across environmental consulting and NSW government agencies. He chairs the NSW Minerals Council’s Environment and Community Committee and has a particular interest in mine closure and beneficial land reuse.


Sam Mella – Senior Project Manager, Beyond Zero Emissions
A recognised cleantech advocate, Sam authored the Hunter Case Study in BZE’s Million Jobs Plan and led the popular Hunter Energy Evolutionvideo series. She is a prominent voice on zero-emissions strategies and energy innovation in the Hunter region.


Darren Clarke – Director Regional Coordination, Planning and Communities, EnergyCo
With more than two decades in environmental planning and stakeholder engagement, Darren plays a key role in delivering Renewable Energy Zones across the Hunter, Central Coast, and New England. He works across all levels of government to support efficient rollout of energy infrastructure.


Michelle Kiejda – Principal and Technical Service Line Leader – Asset Transition, GHD Newcastle
Michelle has over 20 years of consulting experience, specialising in mine rehabilitation, closure planning, and environmental management. She currently leads a variety of transition projects for mining and power industries across the Hunter and beyond.
