Managing the Hunter River estuary – applying new information and management approaches for better outcomes

This HEI seminar explored innovative management approaches for the Hunter River and its estuary, focusing on flood mitigation and coastal management. The presentation covered the recent review of the Hunter Valley Flood Mitigation Scheme (HVFMS), assessing its benefits, impacts, and resilience amid climate change and evolving community needs. Attendees also learned about the development of Coastal Management Programs (CMPs) aimed at restoring estuary health and fostering community engagement.

The seminar highlighted collaborative efforts among local councils and authorities to improve floodplain management and river health through multi-stakeholder partnerships and risk-based planning.
