This webinar brought together leaders in energy, innovation, and sustainability to explore how Australia — and the Hunter region in particular — is navigating the shift to a low-carbon economy. Featuring insights from CSIRO, AGL, the City of Newcastle, and Beyond Zero Emissions, the event addressed current projects and future opportunities in energy transition, including distributed energy, large-scale renewables, hydrogen, and regional economic transformation.
Attendees gained expert perspectives on the closure of the Liddell Power Station, the growth of renewable energy infrastructure in Newcastle, the emerging hydrogen economy, and the broader employment potential of a zero-emissions future. The session highlighted the collaboration needed between government, industry, and communities to drive sustainable change.
Guest Speakers
Paul Graham – Chief Economist, Energy at CSIRO
Paul presented national projections for distributed energy resources and the implications for grid planning and emissions policy. He has over 20 years of experience leading energy transition modelling and contributes to federal emissions reduction strategies.
Adam Clarke – Sustainability Manager, City of Newcastle
Adam shared how Newcastle Council achieved 100% renewable electricity and developed a 5MW solar farm. His work includes energy efficiency, EV infrastructure, and local innovation in decarbonisation.
Amer Hussein – Head of Liddell Transition, AGL Energy
Amer discussed the planning and stakeholder engagement involved in retiring Liddell, one of Australia’s oldest coal-fired power stations, and the implications for the Hunter’s energy future.
Dr Jenny Hayward – Senior Research Scientist, CSIRO Energy
Jenny explored the economic potential of hydrogen for aviation and presented findings from CSIRO’s National Hydrogen Roadmap. Her modelling supports AEMO and government decision-making on emerging energy technologies.
Samantha Mella – Hunter Engagement Lead, Beyond Zero Emissions
Sam introduced the Million Jobs Plan and its vision for clean energy-led economic revitalisation. She shared highlights from the Hunter Region Case Study and her work with Pilbara Solar and BZE’s Hunter Diversification Project.
