This breakfast seminar explored the economic transformation of Newcastle as it transitions from being the world’s largest coal export port to a more diversified and sustainable economic base. With a focus on industry change, infrastructure investment, and local career implications, the event brought together senior leaders and experts to discuss the future of Newcastle’s port and regional economy in a decarbonising world.

Craig CarmodyCEO, Port of Newcastle
Craig Carmody leads the diversification of the Port of Newcastle, applying global experience in shipping strategy and innovation. With a background in the Australian Defence Force, federal government, and maritime sector, he is overseeing efforts to position the port as Australia’s premier East Coast trade gateway.


Hugh FitzSimonsDivision Director, Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets
As Head of Transport & Healthcare for Macquarie Infrastructure & Real Assets (Australia and NZ), Hugh brings deep insight into capital planning and strategic infrastructure development. He holds directorships across major transport and healthcare assets, including the Port of Newcastle and Queensland Airports.


Dr Anthea BillLead Economist, Hunter Research Foundation Centre
Dr Bill heads the HRF Centre’s economic research, with expertise in regional development, socio-spatial disadvantage, and labour markets. Her research supports economic strategy and planning for the Hunter and Greater Newcastle region.
