Meg Mavin - Best combined result in Spatial Science

About Meg

I’m an Environmental Science and Business student in my final year of study at the University of Newcastle, passionate about natural hazards, sustainability, and Human Resource Management. My academic journey has ignited a deep interest in how organisations can effectively respond to environmental challenges while supporting people and fostering long-term growth.

Growing up on the mid-north coast, I worked in my family’s business after school. However, in 2022, I relocated to Newcastle to pursue a university degree, where my passion for the environment has only intensified.

Currently, I work as an undergraduate environmental scientist at a local consulting firm that specialises in geology. This role has provided me with an excellent opportunity to apply my university degree skills, particularly GIS.

In the future hope to combine my knowledge of environmental science and business to help manage environmental risks effectively, develop forward-thinking strategies, and champion sustainable innovation across sectors.

About Andrew

I am a recent graduate of the University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management, majoring in Natural Resources and Hazards. After running my own gardening business in Sydney, I decided to pursue a career more aligned with my strengths and passion for sustainability.

Studying environmental science has deepened my understanding of the complex systems that shape our world. I particularly enjoyed subjects like water catchment management, energy infrastructure, and environmental planning, and I’m grateful to the Hunter Environmental Institute for recognising my efforts.

Fieldwork has been a highlight of my studies, both locally and during a study tour in northern Botswana, where I took part in wildlife monitoring and water testing.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to contribute to Australia’s environmental and planning challenges, especially the transformation of the Hunter region in a low-emissions future. I hope to one day work as a senior strategic planner, helping to shape sustainable, liveable communities through smart infrastructure and land-use planning.
